On a sloping block the cut and the retaining are the same conversation, so we set the pad where it works with the wall rather than leaving a face that has to be re-dug later.
On a Berwick slope the cut face is the risk. Batter it too steep and it slumps in the first wet week, so the pad position, the batter angle and where any retaining wall lands all get decided together before the machine starts.

Do you clear trees and old structures?
We do. Tree and stump removal, old sheds, slabs and driveways all come out as part of the site prep, and the material goes off the block rather than into a corner of it.
